Type 221
The Bristol Type 221 was a high speed research aircraft, based on the Fairey FD2 (WG774). The first FD2 was modified at Filton with several features of Bristols supersonic transport design, which later developed into Concorde. The main differences were an ogeval wing, an 6 foot extention to the fuselage between the cockpit and the engine intakes, lengthened undercarriage, and a fairing at the top of the tail for a cine camera. The first post-conversion flight was on 1st May 1964, piloted by Bristols Chief test pilot Godfrey Auty.
